footCounselling

We offer a free counselling service for children and young people aged 12-24 who live in Macclesfield and surrounding areas.

We know that it can be tough growing up and that children and young people can be faced with lots of different stressors coming from any angle – school/college, family, relationships, friendships, finding or keeping a job, money troubles or self-image. If pressure builds up the person’s wellbeing can be affected and they could feel low, anxious angry or scared. Many young people are struggling with how they feel and counselling can help them talk things through, support them without making them feel judged, and in confidence, it can make a positive difference to their lives.  For more information, have a look below at our frequently asked questions or get in touch.

If you are depressed or angry about something don’t be afraid to ask for counselling, it really does help. It was nice to be able to be honest without being judged.

If you live outside of this footprint, you could try the following sources of support:

Will I have to wait a long time?

We aim to offer everyone a first appointment within 4 weeks and to be able to start counselling within 8.

We work hard to keep our waiting times short but this can sometimes be difficult if a lot of people contact us at once.

Please understand if you have to wait a little bit longer.

There is generally a longer wait for evening and weekend slots. If you don’t want to wait and can afford, you can search for a private counsellor at http://www.bacp.co.uk.

Is there any support for children who are aged under 12?

We do not offer one-to-one counselling for under 12s. If you are worried about a child of this age, the first port of call should be their GP, who will help you to access the right service.

We offer a family-based intervention, Timid to Tiger Together, for parents and carers of children aged 8-11 yrs suffering with anxiety to attend together. Please send all enquiries about this course to parenting@justdropin.co.uk

When does counselling take place?

We have counselling appointments available most days between 10am-8pm. We also have some availability on a Saturday. We always try our best to match you to time that works for you.

Is counselling confidential?

Counselling is confidential unless we become critically concerned about you or someone else. Confidentiality is important to us and we would discuss this for you in counselling sessions – we encourage you to ask questions about this so you are properly informed.

We have completed a Privacy Notice that provides more information on this for you: Young People’s Privacy Notice.

How long can I come to counselling for?

We offer Brief Solution Focused Counselling of 6 sessions and Person Centred of up to 12 sessions. A Counsellor would talk to you about this when you came in for an initial discussion.

How do I make a referral?

We take referrals direct from young people. We do not need a referral from a school or GP.

Parents can refer younger children if they have discussed it with them in advance. To refer, just contact us and we will take some basic information and offer you an initial slot to come in and have a chat.

If you have received counselling with us previously, you can re-refer yourself 3 months after your last appointment.

Can you help with every issue?

Unfortunately we cannot help with everything. We work with children and young people who are experiencing early or moderate difficulties – anyone with higher mental health needs would receive a more appropriate service from a different source. We advise you to discuss this with your GP. Sometimes a more specialist service is needed we can provide guidance on where to go for help.

Who will I be seen by?

Just Drop-In has a strong and skilled counselling team which is made up of Counselling Coordinators, qualified and student counsellors, contractors and volunteer counsellors, who offer counselling from a person-centred approach. All of our counsellors are members of the British Association of Counselling Psychotherapy (https://www.bacp.co.uk/) or Play Therapy UK (http://www.playtherapy.org.uk).

Legendary group of people who want to do nothing except help you.
