Macclesfield Just Drop In - About us

JDI Youth Information and Advice Centre background:-

Macclesfield 'Just Drop-In' was launched in November 2001. JDI was initiated by Churches Together in Macclesfield, in partnership with the Cheshire Youth and Community Service, in order to mark the new Millennium.
JDI is a registered charity, and has been financed for three years by the Community Fund, backed by other organisations. More than £70,000 has been raised by the people of Macclesfield.

JDI is fortunate to have Sir Nicholas Winterton as its patron.

During its first 12 months of operation JDI has helped over 2000 visitors on a wide range of issues.
In 2003 there were 4878 visitors, and
in 2004 it rose to 5804 (3208 male; 2596 female).

We are now in brand new premises (see above) with the Youth Service at 33Great King St.
JDI organisation:-

JDI is managed by an Organisation Management Team Committee, including the Directors and Trustees, who between them have a wealth of experience in both private and public sector business.

It has a full-time Coordinator, a part-time administrator and is supported by a team of over 40 volunteers.

As a policy all volunteers are cleared through the Crimial Records Bureau (CRB) and are given training in listening and the major areas of client needs.

JDI is a supporter of Equal Opportunities.

Guiding Principles

The Macclesfield Churches Management Action Group have defined "Guiding Principles" which will be adopted as a foundation to which all activity will be based. These take account of the principles that the Churches in Macclesfield would wish to have adopted.

The primary requirement is that Just Drop-In Youth Information and Advice Centre should have as its focal point, an area where youth could be welcomed and feel comfortable to relax and if appropriate open to discuss any issues.

Just Drop-In Youth Info & Advice should be managed by an independently appointed co-ordinator (i.e. not representing the Statutory Bodies) who will be tasked to manage within a set of pre-defined principles.

Facilities should be provided for statutory and other bodies to give advice on a 'one to one' basis. It would be appropriate to expect these bodies to pay for the space used to cover operational costs.

Just Drop-In Youth Info & Advice should have the capability to display a wide range of literature for use by the youth attending the Centre.

Consideration should be given to have computer facilities to enable youth to have access to educational/career facilities and information on-line.

Just Drop-In Youth Info & Advice should have food preparation facilities.

The Service Definition should be defined at sub steering group level and then agreed at Steering Group level.

Just Drop-In Youth Info & Advice should not turn away anyone who comes within its doors. It should direct those it is not able to support to the right agency.

We should not:

  • Be seen as an extension to the statutory services provision.
  • Provide accommodation.

Specific Guidelines:
Specific Guidelines have also been developed in respect of other issues (e.g. Contraception, Termination of pregnancy, and Homosexuality), which are considered necessary to enable the Operational Committee to take account of the standards that the Churches in Macclesfield wish to promote.

Overall:
The Drop-In Centre shall promote a respect for life and the individual without discrimination. Any information that is provided shall be consistent with these values.
